Recently, it was heard by someone that there’s nothing to do in the area and they were bored with the LGBTQ community after June. That comment has always stunned me as I find myself overwhelmed at the options that one can take in around Springfield, let alone the Central Illinois area. So, in an attempt to appease those who apparently believe this, CORAL will from time to time, announce the latest happenings in our area for those who need reminding.
For those looking for the bar scene, you now have your choice of two in Springfield. Both Clique and the newly opened Fluid have a lot to offer for those looking for an entertaining nightlife. Both offer a variety of upcoming drag shows and a cool atmosphere to enjoy it. Clique also offers a outdoor area for a break from the indoor activities while Fluid offers non-alcoholic drinks for those who want to participate without the influence.
On Monday, July 28th from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, there will be a community Action Plan Open House at the Southeast High School Commons to discuss changes in the community addressing the Springfield Police department. For the BIPOC community, there is the Urban LGBTQ event at Replay this coming Tuesday on July 29th. Starting at 9:00 p.m. the event will benefit upcoming events for our people of color. Replay will be offering special Pride drinks and a DJ will be spinning the latest tunes. The next night, you can join CORAL and the Phoenix Center with the Lucky Horseshoes for CommUnity Night at the Robin Roberts Stadium. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. as they will be playing the Danville Dans. For our retirees of the LGBTQ community, on Thursdays at 11:30 am, you can take advantage of PrideLinc’s weekly luncheon gatherings. PrideLinc offers meals through Senior Services of Central Illinois by reservation and brings people together for social and educational opportunities. On Friday, the first day of August, the long-running Brothers & Sisters dinner group will be entertaining at Pao’s Bistro at 6:00 p.m. For those interested in joining this group, please email bst217@usi.edu to be included and reserve your spot.
Looking at that first week of August, on Monday, August 4th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the Phoenix Center is hosting “Getting to Zero’s” Summer Tour with a free dinner and discussion for the community on topics on HIV prevention, care, and health equity at their Scarritt location. The Brothers & Sisters dinner group will be eating at the Fairlane Diner in Sherman at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 8th. And, CORAL’s monthly membership meeting will be held Sunday, August 10th either via Zoom or at AgeLinc/PrideLinc at 4:00 pm.
