Out of Darkness Walk Storms Forward

Brian Sylvester

Updated: Oct 8, 2024

Springfield, IL (September 21, 2024) American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) scheduled their annual Out of Darkness Walk for Saturday, September 21st from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. but a little something like a freak thunderstorm sort of put a damper on the plans.  While the walk didn’t take place due to the safety of those participating, the show went on inside the UIS Student Center instead.

Angela Cummings, Executive Director for the Illinois Chapter of AFSP, provided a presentation on how the funds raised by the event help their programs as well as spread awareness of the need for more assistance for those suffering.  She also shared with the participants how grateful she was for those who weathered the storm to be there and announced the top teams and participants.  The event raised a total of $17,646.41 for AFSP overall.

CORAL, as a team, finished seventh out of 27 teams present for the walk, which raised $500.00 with six team members.  A thank you goes out to those who came to either walk or show their support:  Brian Sylvester, Lisa Cotton, Rex Schadow, Barbara Matrisch, Christina Newton, Candice Clodfelter, Jill Dyer, and Mike Johnson.
